FAQs

For Patients

What is medical cannabis?

Medical cannabis refers to the use of the cannabis plant or its extracts (such as THC and CBD) to treat medical conditions. It is prescribed and regulated differently depending on the country or state.

How does medical cannabis work?

The active compounds in cannabis, called cannabinoids (primarily THC and CBD), interact with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a role in regulating pain, inflammation, mood, and other bodily functions.

Is medical cannabis legal in Costa Rica?

Yes. Under Ley N° 10113, medical cannabis is legal in Costa Rica for therapeutic use. However, its production, import, and distribution are regulated by the Ministry of Health.

What conditions can medical cannabis help treat?

Medical cannabis is commonly prescribed for:

  • Chronic pain (arthritis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis)

  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders

  • Nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy

  • Anxiety, PTSD, and depression

  • Sleep disorders and insomnia

  • Neurological conditions (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s)

Will medical cannabis make me feel “high”?

Not necessarily. Products with high THC content can cause psychoactive effects, while CBD-based products provide therapeutic benefits without a “high.” Your doctor can help determine the best formulation for your needs.

How do I take medical cannabis?

  • Oil & tinctures (taken under the tongue for faster absorption)

  • Capsules & edibles (longer-lasting effects)

  • Inhalation (vaping, smoking flower and concentrates) (quick onset but shorter duration)

  • Topicals (for localized pain relief)

  • Gummies (slower onset, longer lasting)

Are there side effects?

Side effects vary by person and dosage but may include dizziness, dry mouth, increased heart rate, and changes in appetite. Long-term effects are still being studied.

Can I drive or operate machinery while using medical cannabis?

If your prescription includes THC, it may impair cognitive function, making it unsafe to drive or operate machinery. Always follow your doctor’s guidance.

Will medical cannabis interact with my other medications?

Cannabis can interact with medications, particularly blood thinners, sedatives, and certain antidepressants. Always consult your doctor before use.

For Doctors

How do I prescribe medical cannabis in Costa Rica?

Medical cannabis must be prescribed under the framework of Ley N° 10113. Doctors must ensure patients meet the criteria for therapeutic use and follow Ministry of Health guidelines for dosage and administration.

How do I determine the right dose for my patient?

Dosing depends on the patient’s condition, prior cannabis experience, and sensitivity. A low-dose, slow-increase approach is recommended to minimize side effects.

What’s the difference between THC and CBD in medical cannabis?

  • THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): Psychoactive, effective for pain, nausea, and appetite stimulation.

  • CBD (Cannabidiol): Non-psychoactive, used for anxiety, seizures, and inflammation.

Many medical formulations balance THC and CBD for optimal therapeutic effects.

Can patients become dependent on medical cannabis?

While cannabis has a lower risk of dependence than opioids, some users may develop cannabis use disorder (CUD), especially with prolonged high-THC use. Monitoring and responsible prescribing are key.

Is medical cannabis covered by insurance in Costa Rica?

Currently, medical cannabis treatments are not covered by public health insurance and must be paid for out-of-pocket. However, private insurance providers may offer partial coverage.

How can I stay updated on medical cannabis research and regulation?

Doctors can refer to:

  • Costa Rican Ministry of Health for legal updates

  • Scientific journals (e.g., Journal of Cannabis Research)

  • International medical cannabis conferences
